Lyrics to Heal Our Land music by Janice Kapp Perry About Senator Orrin Hatch's Music Long before he was a Senator, before he was a lawyer, even before he was a grammar-school-graduate, Orrin Hatch was a musician. Orrin’s love and appreciation for music started young at the gentle encouraging of his parents, Jesse and Helen Hatch. Despite their humble means, Jesse and Helen found ways to bring music into their children’s lives—first bringing a variety of musical instruments into the home and later sacrificing and saving to buy student seats at the local symphony. At age six, Orrin began playing the piano, later taking-up both the organ and the violin. By age twelve, Orrin was regularly attending every concert of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. His passion for music coupled with the support of his parents made it possible for him to attend every concert up to the time he left for college. As a history student at BYU and later a law student at the University of Pittsburgh Law School, Orrin struggled to provide for his growing family, working as a janitor, a metal lather, and as an all-night desk attendant in a dormitory. His busy schedule and varied involvements only increased as he graduated from law school in 1962 and was later elected to the United States Senate in 1976. Yet somewhere between odd jobs, family life, and his studies, Orrin found time to pen poetry. Orrin Hatch’s words were put to music by the well-known singer, song-writer Janice Kapp Perry in 1996. That year Janice approached Orrin about teaming up to write hymns. At first, Orrin didn’t think she was serious, only complimentary. But four months later they met again and Janice suggested teaming-up, beginning a relationship between the two that would later produce hundreds of songs and several albums. The first ten songs Orrin wrote for Janice became the album My God Is Love. Four of those original thirteen songs would later be picked up by major music publishers. Since then Orrin and Janice have continued to write religious music together (Jesus’ Love is Like a River), adding patriotic music (Freedom’s Light, Heal Our Land, I Love America), Christmas songs (Come to the Manger), and love songs to the collection. Orrin’s personal ambitions and political career have introduced him to a variety of people, each playing a unique role in his music career. For his dear friend Muhammad Ali, Orrin wrote The Difference Makes the Difference and for Vicki and Ted Kennedy, the love song, Souls Along the Way. He wrote six songs with singer, songwriter Billy Hinsche of the Beach Boys, teamed with music writer Madeline Stone to write Whispers of My Heart, and produced, along with the famed Peter McCann, the love song, All Because of You for Orrin's wife. One of his recent albums, How His Glory Shines, features the vocal talent of Pastor Wintley Phipps, a spirit-filled preacher and world-renowned vocal artist.
