| About 4pm
In 1991 brothers Roberto Pena, Jr. and Reney (Ray)
Pena along with longtime friends Larry McFarland and Martiz Ware
decided to pursue their lifelong dream. From a small suburb just
outside of Baltimore, MD the group 4PM (originally known as IV Real)
was created. Their smooth harmonies and unique accapella style catapulted
4PM from local talent shows to pursuing a recording contract in
New York City.
In 1994, after performing at a record release party,
an executive from Next Plateau Records approached 4PM. A few weeks
later they were in the studio recording what would be their first
and most successful song to date SUKIYAKI. The group celebrated
as their first single climbed the charts and peaked at number 8
on Billboard's Hot 100 in February 1995. Their debut album NOW'S
THE TIME gained international acclaim earning gold status in U.S.,
Canada, and Japan; and platinum status in Australia. Their success
led to several tours in the U.S., Canada and Asia.
4PM's second album A LIGHT IN THE DARK, released
in 1997; also gained international acclaim. However, during this
period, the group experienced a few setbacks when Next Plateau closed
its doors and Martiz Ware left the group. These events to led a
short hiatus in 1998. Roberto, Ray, and Larry regrouped, and formed
their own production company and independent record label, PENA
BROTHERS PRODUCTIONS.
In May of 2000 4PM would once again hit the studio
to record their 3rd album. This self-titled album would prove to
be a different experience for Roberto, Ray and Larry. For the first
time they would have total control of their project.
